Poor Player! Thrown from time to time and place to place, he finds himself for once in familiar surroundings. At a local cafe, he even encounters an old colleague from a previous Engagement – only find himself facing half a lifetime’s resentments, and staring down two large-caliber derringer barrels.

Approximately 1,800 words. A Player story with…[Read more]

A slave to an extra-dimensional master, bassist Player is thrown from time to time and place to place to experience human performing arts (which The Employer will later copy from his mind and, somehow, sell).
But after an Engagement which ends in murder and vengeance, Player . . . just might be free. Where should he go? What should he do? What is…[Read more]

Death has an uninvited visitor in his vast underworld realm: a divinely-gifted singer, Orfea, has come to demand her beloved Yuri be returned to Life.
It’s against company policy, of course. But Orfea has an advocate who is hard to ignore.

Influenced by Roger Zelazny, based on the Greek myth of Orfeo and Euridice. 2,000 words.

Great! Was it announced? I wasn’t able to listen this past Saturday, but will be listening to it today. Love Daniel Older!

Well, I’ve got the ghosts of a 96 year old woman and her husband pitted against the guy who’s trying to “improve” and flip the beloved Craftsman bungalow she lived in most of her life here in “Little Louisiana.” Narrator is her 70-year-old adopted “nephew” who works as a local handyman.

    Greetings Lifewriters!

We’re going to have a “hotseat” evaluation of a short story this Saturday, December 10th, to illustrate the “Lifewriting” approach to story and the process of creation. We’ll be doing this monthly, and while only you members get to actually enter or read the stories, anyone is welcome to listen in and ask questions.…[Read more]

Following off of Tananarive’s post in another thread about focusing on what you *have* done instead of what you failed to do, I’m going to post a few gratitudes to my past self:

I’m grateful for the 1000+ words of a new short story I’ve worked on this week
I’m grateful for the revision schedule I’ve created for myself
    I’m grateful for the…[Read more]

let us know your progress. Self examination is a wonderful thing. uncovering the belief: “I’m not a real writer unless I”m full-time” leads one to asking a foundational: “is it true?” “according to what values?” “who taught me this?” “were they themselves successful?” “If not, why was their opinion important?” and so forth.

Great! I know a lot of people who have participated in this contest, and it has an excellent reputation. Keep us posted, and let us help!

You might try writing a fantasy or SF version. Exaggerate to the absurd, or create metaphors. A time-honored way of distancing discomfort.

I’ve made a decision, and am now working out logistics to arrange the call. The announcement will be later today or tomorrow, here and via email. If you weren’t chosen, THANK YOU for your submission. We want to do one of these a month. In the mean time, READ EACH OTHER’S stories. Form reading partnerships. Whatever method of analysis you…[Read more]

Thanks for bringing this up, Austin. I’ve definitely heard of WotF before but assumed it was SF only. But it looks like they also take fantasy…so…GULP, I guess I’m in too!

The first step is loving yourself enough that none of your self-image comes from other people. None of your sense of worth comes from other people. That means that your “needy wounded abandoned child” must be smothered with hugs and kisses, as well as disciplined when he throws tantrums. There’s your work. The “Ancient Child” meditation is…[Read more]

I was listening to a standup comic last night who laughs a lot and shared his secret for happiness: instead of beating himself up for what he’s NOT doing, he appreciates himself for what he IS doing. So when the voices say, “Hey, loser–I thought you were going to finish your essay/story today,” I’m going to try to substitute a voice that says,…[Read more]

Then your first goal is to find a goal, dude! Attentional judo. Say, (for instance): “one year from today I will have my first lifetime goal.” Then, for the next 12 months you dive deep into the question of who you are, which will lead you to what you really want.

Knowing that you don’t know is actually waking up!

I certainly had the “Hey–that’s ME!” reaction to quite a few items on your list!

I identified especially the odd anxiety reaction and the “NOTHING YOU DO COUNTS” reaction. For me it’s “either you’re making your living as a writer, or you’re a hack! so just give up”. Except it doesn’t come in as a thought in words, it’s just this heavy feeling…[Read more]

    Thanks so much guys.

My challenge is: I want to set goals that come from my SOUL and my ENTHUSIASM.
Dont want to force myself for goals I dont REALLY want anymore…. “wasting willpower” so to speak.

And I dont really know what I REALLY want at the moment.

    Daniel
