Site-Wide Activity

Thank you. Very much. I’ve always thought of stories like that as “too much me” for public consumption, but I don’t have to *share* anything I’ve written, right? I’ll try that.

And I’ll try the process you suggest at the end. I’ve recently tried starting a routine much like that, and have been having trouble doing it more than a couple of days a…[Read more]

That makes sense to me. I mean, my dad’s approach was less than helpful at times, but I did know it was coming from a place of wanting me to succeed. And eventually I realized he had some of the same issues, and he was trying to give me the only toolkit that had worked for him.

There’s a fine line between compassionate support and actively…[Read more]

Ellen–you are right that he spends seems to spend little time on compassion for those who are drowning. ON the other hand, you might think that a person who spends decades studying success is SPECIFICALLY AND DEEPLY concerned with the plight of the drowning, and wanted to find the very best methods of swimming, constructing life preservers, and…[Read more]

    Amanda–
“Think And Grow Rich” is an amazing look into the minds of people who have lifted themselves up and become “successful” in the sense of “the progressive realization of a worthy goal.” There is an enormous gap between the thought patterns of such people, and the thought patterns of identical people in identical situations who get lesser…[Read more]

This is not TMI…it is precisely what is needed to dig in and get honest. What you said about self-loathing is PRECISELY what stops us. Lack of self-love and acceptance. So you start out hot and heavy, then trail off, over and over again. Which weakens your self-esteem and belief you can accomplish your goals. Note how separate this is from…[Read more]

If this capacity has existed for a long time, I suspect it is more positive than negative overall.

Hi, Amanda. I have similar issues and thoughts. I put mine into writing in a different forum here (Questions, I think). I’ll focus on what you’re bringing up here.

Hill’s book is problematic for me in oh-so-many-ways. It also strikes me as being the Great-Great-Grandpappy of all Self-Help books.

It helps to remember that it was published in…[Read more]

    Hello everyone.

I probably won’t be commenting a lot because I’m at stage 1 of Steve’s stages (“love yourself without guilt or shame”) and socializing has always baffled me and/or caused me stress.

So I’ve been doing a lot of thinking, reading (Think & Grow Rich), writing, and reflecting, and I wanted to share some of my thoughts and questio…[Read more]

I’m taking this class at either a the very best time or the worst time possible, I’m not sure.

I’m having a hard time working through the readings, mostly because the writing style is driving me crazy (I’ll get there). I’m finding it a bit amusing how much this is the Great-great-grandpappy of all self-help books — just about all of those I’ve…[Read more]

I shouldn’t say theory, per se, as much as ideas, like, what would the psychology of a group mind be like, and how would it react to different stressors and influences, including potential annihilation? (that’s one of my species).

A different species in my work: what if a culture/people, stressed by PTSD-inducing trauma, possessed a telepathic…[Read more]

If you will commit to writing 100 stories, I can PROMISE you that you’ll publish long before you get there. Give yourself room to make mistakes. The “Machine” is: write a story a week or every other week. Read 10X as much as you write. Finish what you write. Put them in the mail and keep them there. Keep going until you are publishing…[Read more]

What were your emotions as you wrote this? I imagine it was difficult for you.

Hello! My name is Sonia. Sorry for the late introduction. I am new to writing in a manner of speaking. I have always had ideas floating around in my head but never put them down on paper. My interest area for fiction is mainly sci-fi. I have never actually written a fiction story…wait I take that back. I have begun several but never finished.…[Read more]

  • Hello everyone,

Here are my 500 words after watching the documentary 13th:

Shelby got in her car unbearably tired and drained after a difficult day at work. She wanted to lean her head against the back of the car seat but her better instincts told her to drove away as fast as she could. She was on the road and her mind automatically flowed back…[Read more]

How have you tried to integrate psychological theory into your work?

  • Steven Barnes replied to the topic in the forum Site-Wide Activity 9 years, 6 months ago

I’m still learning how to do this properly myself! NLP is a “toolbox” with no more morality than a screwdriver. There is one exception I know of, the “Core Transformation” technique by Connirae Andreas of NLP Comprehensive in Colorado. But the stuff is powerful. Another issue is that one of the creators of the discipline was…well, not a…[Read more]

Thanks for the link, RJ. Wow, the last person who edited that page *really* didn’t like NLP. LOL.
